Last summer I volunteered in Myanmar teaching English at Phaung Daw Oo. It was a great experience and I would recommend it for anyone. So, on the basis of that experience, I was thinking about doing the same thing this summer in Honduras or Cuba. Last night, I started exploring my options online only to find out that volunteering is not free, not even cheap. Prices for most volunteer situations start at around 1,200 USD for two weeks. In my opinion, that's a bit excessive. The price includes, housing with a family, three meals a day and insurance. I haven't ever been to Honduras, but from what I've read, I could probably stay there for two months on that amount of money living in a hotel and buying all my own meals. What the price doesn't include is airfare, ANY in country travel or pretty much anything else. Where does the money go? Seems to me that administration of these organizations must be doing pretty well.
I'm interested in hearing about any organization/school that might want a volunteer teacher for a few weeks during the summer that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.
BTW, if you are interested in volunteering in Burma, I'd highly recommend looking into Phaung Daw Oo. I promise I'll write about my experiences one day.
